When I started using Smart Home technology, I wasn’t entirely sure what I needed. It seemed so convoluted and confusing, that’s why I’m here to help you understand which of these options is best for you based on your budget and requirements.

Google Home Mini – The Budget Voice Assistant

If you’re getting into entry level Smart Home stuff, the Google Home Mini is perfect for you. You can stream music, control various other Smart Home devices, create calendar appointments and more!

At a price bracket which is half of the Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Generation), it’s the perfect beginners voice assistant for basic tasks. Not sure whether to pick the Google Home or Amazon Echo?

Google also does give away free Google Home Mini devices on occasion.

Amazon Echo – My favourite voice assistant

Amazon Echos

This is the device I have in every room, whether it’s the Echo Dot, Echo Flex and even the Echo Show. It’s twice the price of the Google Home Mini but due to its flexible device variants and ecosystem it’s a much better pick.

Amazon doesn’t have a habbit of simply buying out other Smart Home products and stopping them from operating.

It’s worth noting that Amazon products often go on big sales during Prime Day, Black Friday & Cyber Monday.

Apple Homepod – The ‘Elite’ Choice

The Apple Homepod is so expensive, at £200 ($260) you should only really get this device if you’re already locked into the Apple ecosystem. Personally, I think this is just too expensive for a simple voice assistant.

It doesn’t make you a tea or coffee but it plays music very nicely, so if that’s a big deal to you, this may be worth picking up. If you’re using it for music, I’d highly suggest using a Sonos Speaker instead if you want good sound quality.
