How to Turn off Firestick

Turning off your Amazon Fire Stick can be quite frustrating as there’s not a power button on every generation of Fire Stick. If you leave your Fire TV Stick for 20 minutes it will automatically put itself to sleep which uses less power and will receive software updates. If you want to put your Fire TV stick to sleep manually, follow the steps listed below.

There are three routes you can go down when attempting to turn off the Amazon Fire Stick, if you’re using the original Fire Stick where there is no power button you will need to use the Quick Access Menu or the Amazon Fire TV App on your Smart Device.

1. Using the Quick Access Menu

If you want to put your Fire TV Stick to sleep, simply press and hold the Home button on your Fire TV Sticks Remote, this will bring up the quick access menu. From here, select “Sleep” with the moon icon.

Press and hold the “Home” button on the remote for 3 – 5 seconds, this will pull up the “Quick access menu”.

Your Screen will now turn black, if you press any buttons this will wake up the Fire Stick again

2. Using the Fire TV Smart Phone App

Don’t want to get your remote from the side table? The Fire TV App can be used straight from your Smart Device. Whilst it’s not perfect and often doesn’t connect properly, it can help you get out of tight spots. You can download the Fire TV App from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Once you’ve downloaded the Fire TV App, simply open it and follow these steps:

Select the Network your Amazon Firestick is on (Your Phone will have needed to connect to it prior) This will connect the app directly to your Smart Device. If this is your first time connecting to your Fire TV Stick using the app, you will need to sign into your Amazon account and then input the 4 digit code displayed on your TV.

Select the Gear in the top left of your screen.

Select Gear on the Fire TV App

Select “Sleep” from the options

Your Amazon Fire TV Stick will now be asleep, pressing any buttons on the remote/app will wake this up.

3. Turning off the Fire Stick from the Home Screen

If you’re on the home screen of your Fire TV Stick, you can put your device to sleep by going to the top section for categories all the way over to “Settings“, from here select “My Fire TV” and scroll down to sleep.

What is the Fire TV sleep Mode?

While you may have put the Fire Stick to sleep, it isn’t 100% powered off, during sleep mode your screen will be black. However, your Fire TV Stick will still receive automatic software-based updates during this time. This means the only way to make sure that your Fire Stick is 100% turned off is to unplug the device.

If your Fire TV Stick hasn’t had any activity for 20 minutes (Up to 30 minutes for Gen 1 devices), it will put itself to sleep automatically.

If you have a newer generation remote the power button may turn your TV off but in doing so it will not turn off the Firestick itself.

Can I leave my Firestick on all the time?

Leaving your Firestick on is not a problem as it will put itself to sleep automatically, pressing any button on the Fire TV remote will wake it up.

We recommend not constantly unplugging your FireStick or turning it off at the power source as from experience you will find connectivity issues to your WiFi and account occur more frequently.
