Should you consider the Trådfri for Google Mini?

You’ve bought yourself a trådfri (tradfri for the rest of this article for Google ranking purposes!) set of lights and you’re wondering if your Google Mini could be the sole controller. Simply put, yes. The Google Home can control the tradfri lights from Ikea.

If you’re new into the realm of Smart Home Lighting and want to compare them first, I urge you to check out my blog post on The Best Smart Home Lights.

If you’re looking for a complete How to set up Tradfri with your Google Home guide, I have you covered!

Before I start, let me prefix this by saying Tradfri make this extremely confusing, you will need to not only have the bulbs and a Google Mini or other home assistant device but if you want to control it via your phone or group them together you will need a gateway which plugs into your router such as the Philips Hue Bridge. It’s a pain, I know, but such is life for such a cheap product!

If you don’t have a hub like so, you will need to manually control it from one specific app on your phone, the Google Home App. You’ll be able to turn them on and off via the app and change the brightness.

Given the price range of these devices, I don’t think you can really go wrong. Yes, the dimmers, motion sensors and remotes are all separate… But they’re so cheap! For any beginner Smart Home user, this could be a key product.

Personally, I rate them up there in the “Not great, but not the worst” bracket, probably a solid 6/10 in terms of functionality and quality, but nothing to really be excited about if you’re in the Philips Hue Ecosystem for example.
